Raingutter Regatta

Our annual Raingutter Regatta is a fun, hands-on event where Cub Scouts race handcrafted sailboats down water-filled rain gutters using only the power of their breath! Scouts showcase their creativity, engineering skills, and teamwork as they design and decorate their boats, then compete head-to-head in an exciting race to the finish line. It’s an action-packed event that fosters friendly competition, encourages perseverance, and brings together families for an unforgettable experience. Ready, set, blow!

Event Need-to-Knows

Here’s what you need to know for the event

  • Scouts will race their handcrafted boats by blowing into the sails along rain gutters.

  • Each scout must secure their own kit/supplies. Purchase regatta kit at Nashville Scout Store (3414 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37215) or via Amazon. Cub scouts may also craft their own boat as long as it follows guidelines (see below).

  • Additional activities include Gaga Ball and outdoor games (weather permitting).

  • Ice cream sandwiches will be served for all scouts to celebrate the popcorn fundraiser success!

  • Popcorn prizes will also be distributed at the event.

Boat requirements

  • Scouts have freedom to design their boats with minimal effort—get creative! You can use materials like aluminum foil, part of a pool noodle, or pieces of styrofoam (e.g., to-go boxes or egg cartons). Check Pinterest for ideas.

  • Boat width cannot exceed 3" to fit in the rain gutter. Aim for a smaller size to account for any tilt in the gutter that may affect water levels.

  • Boats must float! Scouts should test them at home to ensure they’re Regatta-ready.

  • Don’t forget the sail! NO motors—scouts will use a balloon pump for propulsion (balloon pumps will be provided).
